Crafty Profiles: GcmF

Almost a year has passed since the last artisan profile here on Beyond the Junkpile. And that's waaaay too long, regardless of how little love this blog has seen in 2013.

So Crafty Profiles are back, starting with a personal favourite of mine - recycled leather. Today's designer, Gabriella Ferrante, has recently launched a new label in the world of reclaimed and recycled leather handbags.

Shop: GcmF
Goods: shoulder bags, totes, wristlets

Beyond Junk:
How did you get started as a designer? And what got you interested in working with recycled material?

GcmF:
I have been creating since I was 8 or 9, as dad was a tailor, so there were all the tools/machines to play with. I sold things on and off for years, until I finally completed a Fashion Diploma at Uni 2 years ago.
Working with recycled materials just makes sense to me. I have been eco-conscious for many years, but it was when I researched leather production for a Uni assignment that I really became aware of how bad/toxic it can be. Not always, but often. I was doing a collection of ladies evening wear dresses, and made one totally out of recycling leather pants....

Beyond Junk:
What inspired you to open an online store?
GcmF:
I guess it is much easier to do than opening a bricks and mortar store! I realise that many people shop online, so one must have an online presence. Also, this leaves me scope for moving around the world (I am a bit of a gypsy)....

Beyond Junk:
Aside from using recycled material, is your work environmentally friendly in any other way?

GcmF:

Yes. Leather glues are usually very toxic: you must wear gloves, and have good ventilation when using it. I have found a non-toxic alternative, which is fantastic. I also make my own non-toxic paste to paint on the inside of my bags to stop shedding.

Beyond Junk:
Tell us a bit about your plans for GcmF
GcmF:
I would like to keep it simple in design, but fashion forward.
I guess my ideal is to move back to Europe next year, and get back amongst it. It is quite difficult finding offcuts here in Australia, as there is not alot of local production anymore... My background is Italian, so I like to be over that part of the world...

Here are a few of shots of Gabriella's artful modern collection, recently launched on Big Cartel.

Modern solutions to office waste

Today, the Junkpile is pleased to present a guest post from Bywaters, one of the UK’s leading recycling and resource management companies.

Modern solutions to office waste

Offices, regardless of the business or company behind them, tend to produce a fair amount of waste. This is to be expected, after all the very nature of productivity demands it, but dealing with it can be difficult.

Office waste has been a problem since as far back as 2008 when it was estimated to cost UK businesses a staggering £15 billion a year. Thankfully there are many ways to deal with such waste and with increased awareness of the environment and the effects discarding old materials can have on the world around us, every office should be aiming to dispose of their waste responsibly.

Recycling

The majority of office waste takes the form of paper and plastic and these can all be dealt with very easily. A professional answer, such as Bywaters recycling bins, offers a perfect example.

These bins are simple to use, keeping recyclable materials separated for easy processing. Recycling is a far more responsible solution to waste disposal than land-fill or other options, ensuring that we don’t produce unnecessary waste.

According to the 2008 article in The Guardian, Britain used to lag behind the rest of Europe when it came to recycling – boasting a rate of just 17.7% for the 335 million tonnes of waste it produces. Hopefully this situation has improved since then and businesses can all do their part to bring our attitudes up to standard.

Reducing

In partnership with recycling, you should also take proactive measures to reduce the amount of waste your produce. Part of this can involve cutting down on paper usage by limiting the number of emails printed or going paper-free where possible.

Choosing the right materials can also prove beneficial. For example, paper and plastic are two very easily recycled materials so it would be best to deal with these wherever possible. Purchasing recycled goods can also play an important part in limiting your waste contributions.

Additional benefits

Aside from the green benefits of these approaches, you should consider how else you can benefit. Taking active measures to tackle company waste head-on can boost morale and act as a positive influence on your staff and their working environment.

Secondly, the implications it has on the company image can be high. Being green is of big importance in the modern world and many customers and clients come to expect it from those they deal with. If you fall short of their expectations then you may find your business is left behind.

Recycled Polyethylene PE Plastic Chain

Providing recycled chain for customers of Beyond Junk has been a high priority for me since I started the shop back in 2010. As a designer who works with recycled material myself, I see the need for recycled chain to complete pendants, necklaces, bracelet and earrings you've worked hard to create from as much recycled content as possible.

The search has been long and tedious, covering organic cotton cord, vintage and salvaged chain, and the fruitless search for recycled silver chain by the foot.

Today, I'm adding a few listings for recycled Polyethylene (PE) plastic chain, sourced from Linyi Wells Rigging Import & Export Co. Ltd. in China. If enough of you are interested, I can bring in more colours including black, blue, and yellow.

The Politics of Crafting with Bullets

Hello Junkpile, it's been too long. Again. As tends to happen in the house surrounding the Junkpile, life is busy, busy, busy once again. But since I have a moment to make a post here, I thought it would be fun to share a relevant story from my other business, Sleepless Storyteller.

You may have already seen bullet and bullet cap listings on Beyond Junk. Or perhaps you've read my how-to guide on making them yourself. It won't surprise you to hear that I use my own supplies, and that when it comes to bullets, these little bits of bling can be real conversation starters.

I asked my Sleepless Facebook page how they felt about seeing bullets in jewellery. And the response was surprisingly positive. Read the original here or keep scrolling.

Do you have thoughts on this subject? Post your comment here or head over to Beyond Junk's Facebook page and tell me why you would or wouldn't use bullets in your art.
